⚖️Side-by-Side Comparison
Utilita has supplied pay-as-you-go energy since 2003 and was one of the first UK suppliers to put smart meters into homes. Since selling around 43,000 credit customers to EDF in November 2025, it supplies prepayment customers only, which makes it the obvious name for anyone who wants to stay on pay as you go. Octopus serves 7.3 million households on every payment type, including Smart Pay As You Go. Utilita figures below come from its own site, Which?, Citizens Advice, Uswitch and Trustpilot as of September 2026; check Utilita's current terms before you decide.

📲Prepayment & Smart Pay As You Go
Prepayment is Utilita's whole business, and it shows. You can top up in the My Utilita app, online, by phone or SMS, or at PayPoint and Payzone shops. There's £15 of emergency credit, extended friendly-credit hours so you aren't cut off overnight or at weekends, an Auto Pay option, and a “POWER UP” feature for short-term help when money is tight. Utilita also runs regional Energy Hubs where you can get advice face to face, which some households genuinely value.
Octopus's equivalent is Smart Pay As You Go. With a compatible smart meter you top up in the Octopus app, in your online account, by phone, or with a top-up card or barcode at PayPoint, Payzone or the Post Office. Credit normally reaches the meter within a few minutes. You can set an auto top-up that adds an amount you choose whenever your balance drops below £5, each meter has £10 of emergency credit, and friendly-credit hours cover evenings and weekends. If you're repaying debt on a smart meter, Octopus lets you set the recovery rate anywhere between £1 and £10 a week.
Two honest caveats. Octopus still supports traditional key and card meters, but it says non-smart prepay carries higher rates and fewer top-up options, so a free smart meter is the better route. And Octopus supports certain models of smart prepayment meter rather than all of them, so check yours is covered before you switch. Our prepayment meters guide covers how Octopus prepay works in more detail.
⭐Customer Service & Regulation
Utilita's scores depend heavily on who is asking. On Trustpilot it holds 4.3/5 from around 112,000 reviews, and in Citizens Advice's April to June 2026 star rating it scored a perfect 5 for contact waiting time, with an average call wait of about five seconds. Which? credits it with excellent support for vulnerable customers. The same sources also show the weak spots: Which? placed it 11th of 17 in its latest customer survey with a 68% score, and Citizens Advice ranks it 15th overall (2.53/5), scoring just 0.5 out of 5 on complaints received. Utilita disputes the Citizens Advice methodology.
Regulation matters more than usual on prepay. Ofgem opened an investigation into Utilita on 13 November 2024 covering, among other things, treating customers fairly, support for customers who self-disconnect, prepayment meter installations including involuntary ones, and warrants for debt recovery. It was still listed as open when we checked, and Ofgem stresses that opening an investigation doesn't mean it has found a breach. Utilita has paid redress before, including £500,000 in 2020 after overcharging almost 40,000 prepayment customers and £277,000 in 2025 for late Warm Home Discount payments. For balance, Octopus paid £1.5 million in July 2025 after failing to send final bills to around 34,500 former prepayment customers on time.
Octopus holds a 4.8/5 Trustpilot rating from over 800,000 reviews and has been a Which? Recommended Provider for 9 consecutive years. Our full Octopus Energy review covers its service record in depth.
⚡Tariffs
Utilita keeps it to one product, Smart Energy, available as dual fuel or single fuel. It has no standing charge. Instead you pay a higher rate until you've spent a set amount in a day (Utilita currently quotes 86p), then a cheaper Saver Rate for the rest of that day. The prices follow the Ofgem prepayment cap and there are no exit fees. The appeal is simple: if you use no energy on a given day, you pay nothing for that day.
Octopus prepay customers are on its standard variable pricing, which tracks the cap in the same way as Flexible Octopus, with a daily standing charge and a unit rate. The bigger difference is what's available if you ever move off prepay. Utilita no longer supplies credit customers at all, so leaving prepay means leaving Utilita. At Octopus, a smart meter can usually be switched from prepay to credit mode remotely, which opens up Agile, Tracker, Intelligent Go, Cosy and Flux. Those smart tariffs generally need a credit meter and Direct Debit.
🌱Green Energy
Utilita's environmental pitch centres on smart meters and helping customers use less, and it now sells home solar too. Which? gave it 35% in its Eco Provider assessment. Check Utilita's current fuel mix disclosure for how much of its electricity is renewable.
Octopus backs its electricity with renewable certificates and goes further than most: it generates and manages around 4GW of renewable capacity through Octopus Energy Generation, with roughly £6 billion in assets across 240+ projects. If you want your bill linked to new wind and solar, Octopus has the stronger claim.
💷Pricing
Both suppliers price prepayment in line with the Ofgem cap, so neither is dramatically cheaper for a typical home. From 1 October 2026 the cap for a typical dual-fuel household is £1,678 a year on prepayment, slightly below the £1,723 Direct Debit figure and well below the £1,861 for paying on receipt of a bill. Ofgem has removed the old prepayment premium, so being on a prepay meter no longer costs you more for the same energy.
Where the two differ is structure. Utilita's no-standing-charge model genuinely helps very low users and homes that sit empty for stretches, because quiet days cost little or nothing. For typical and higher users, the fixed costs are still there, just recovered through the higher first rate each day, so the annual total tends to land close to the cap either way. The only reliable test is a quote at your own usage from each supplier.
The larger savings at Octopus come from moving off prepay onto a smart tariff when your circumstances allow, plus the £50 referral credit on switching. That credit applies whether you join on Smart Pay As You Go or Direct Debit.
🔄Switching from Utilita (and What Happens to Debt)
Debt on a prepayment meter is the main thing that can stop a switch, so it's worth being clear about the rules. Under the industry's Debt Assignment Protocol, a prepayment customer can switch supplier while owing up to £500 for gas and up to £500 for electricity. The debt doesn't disappear: it moves to the new supplier, and you carry on repaying it there. Two limits apply. The new supplier has to agree to take the debt on, so ask Octopus about it when you sign up rather than assuming. And if you owe more than £500 on either fuel, Utilita can object to the switch until the balance is below the threshold. If you think a switch has been blocked unfairly, Citizens Advice publishes a template letter you can use.
The switch itself works like this:
- Check your meter and balance. Note your meter type and any debt per fuel, and check Octopus supports your smart prepayment meter model.
- Sign up with Octopus using a referral link to claim your £50 free credit. Utilita charges no exit fees.
- Octopus handles the transfer. Your smart meter is put into credit mode during the switch so your supply isn't interrupted.
- Back to pay as you go. After the switch, submit Octopus's short form and the meter returns to Smart Pay As You Go mode within a few working days. Or stay in credit mode and pay by Direct Debit.
Our step-by-step switching guide walks through the process in full.

🏆Our Verdict
Verdict: Octopus for most prepay households; Utilita for very low users who value no standing charge.
Utilita is a real specialist. Its no-standing-charge tariff, £15 emergency credit, quick phone answering and Energy Hubs suit some households well. But its independent ratings are mixed, it faces an open Ofgem investigation into its prepayment practices, and because it now only supplies prepay, it can't offer you anything else if your circumstances change. Octopus gives you a capable Smart Pay As You Go service with app and auto top-ups, a 4.8/5 Trustpilot rating from 800,000+ reviews, nine years as a Which? Recommended Provider, a remote route onto its smart tariffs, and £50 credit when you switch.
If you're a Utilita customer with less than £500 of debt per fuel and a supported smart meter, switching takes about 5 minutes online. For how the rest of the market compares, see our best energy supplier 2026 rankings.
