Energy Bills Rise 3.6% on 1 October
Ofgem confirmed the October price cap on 26 August: £1,723 a year for a typical household from 1 October, up 3.6% — about £60, and gas drove almost all of it, rising 8.7%, while the electricity standing charge actually fell 4.1%. January is the one to plan for. Cornwall Insight — which called October to within £14 — forecasts around £1,872 for January, a further 8.7% arriving when winter usage peaks. Martin Lewis has said people on the cap should fix. The catch elsewhere is exit fees of £25–£150 per fuel; Octopus charges none on any tariff, so fixing there stays reversible. Also on 1 October, VAT on electricity drops from 5% to 0% until 31 March 2027 — Ofgem says the cap would have risen around 6% without it. And if you qualified for the Warm Home Discount on 23 August, the £150 lands between November and 31 March. Either way the £50 referral credit is the one number here that's certain.
